Day 56, Novi Sad, SRB – Bačka Palanka, SRB

logbook 25 07 17

The official journey is over — but we’re still moving, still documenting, still listening as we bring the ship back home. The crew has changed: Gigi and Stephan have left; Markus and Christine remain on board, heading upstream with a changing cast of artist-friends. The logbook continues.

Last night, we welcomed our next guest on board: Mathias Haunschmidt. He works in the field of cultural studies and comes from Linz. He’ll be joining us for about a week.

We also met Fritz and Sepp – Fritz brought his sailing boat from Linz to Novi Sad, where he’ll leave it over winter before continuing his journey into the unknown – in the best sense of the word – next year. As always when boat people meet, we shared stories and talked boats, winds, and the ways of water. I last met Fritz on the Main, both of us on different boat trips. Let’s see where we meet next.

I had really been looking forward to returning to Novi Sad. I’d love to spend more time here – and in Serbia in general. Now, as we leave Novi Sad behind, Budapest starts to appear on the horizon, and with that comes the feeling that Austria is not so far away – at least in our minds. Markus and I have already talked about slowing down; neither of us is in a hurry to leave the ship.

But for now, I’m trying to stay focused on the present – and to enjoy the wild, shifting riverbanks around us.
