The official journey is over — but we’re still moving, still documenting, still listening as we bring the ship back home. The crew has changed: Gigi and Stephan have left; Markus and Christine remain on board, heading upstream with a changing cast of artist-friends. The logbook continues.
It’s becoming less frequent, but for several days now, we’ve been seeing thousands of dead mussels in the water. Large ones, the size of a hand, as well as smaller species. Mostly just the mussel bodies drifting – without their shells.
We’re worried. Could the water be too warm? We don’t know if this is a one-time event or a sign of ongoing climate change. And we don’t know whether it’s a local phenomenon or something affecting other parts of the Danube as well. It’s unsettling.
We’re on our way to Novi Sad now – welcoming a new guest on board. We’re looking forward to arriving in the city, where we already had a good time on the downstream journey.
